NEW Project reDANCE
reDANCE is a new project curated and produced by Sara Wookey. It is a program that celebrates the cultural value of dance. It features re-enacted works and processes of the renowned choreographers of the Judson Dance Theater era performed by a next generation of dance artists. Collaborating across disciplines reDANCE explores the immateriality of dance and its archival practices. As a platform for public engagement, reDANCE aims to reach a diverse public through participation and in exchange with local artists, students and scholars.

*My NOTE: This interview by Stanford Kwinter, Professor of Theory and Criticism at Harvard's GSD, with Marina Abramovic is problematic in many ways but worth adding to the dialogue. MA gets it wrong in that she says artists where paid $50/hr but she does not account for the up to 15 hours of rehearsal time. I also disagree wholeheartedly with Kwinter's assumptions that Rainer's response is within a "puritanical" context. And they both miss the point of exploitation of artists' labor rights in Rainer's letter and, especially, mine by diverting to issues of sexuality, genitalia and nudity. AND, by the way: Kwinter keeps referring to Rainer as a "performance artist". She is a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker.

‘Dance is hard to see’, wrote Yvonne Rainer when making her seminal
Trio A. In this panel we depart from both Rainer’s statement and the
work Trio A to raise questions of transmitting dance. How do technologies and systems of transmission, both old and new, mediate the process of learning a dance? What does it mean to re-construct a dance and what are the methods being used and in what combination? How do we evaluate a successful transmitted dance versus one that embraces the loss of translation over time and through bodies? Why the fascination with preserving dance at all?

I have recently learned and been certified to teach Trio A by Yvonne Rainer. I am currently working as her research assistant at UC Irvine and launching the "Transmitting Trio A" project. This project explores the language used in the dance transmitting process and culminates a material-based project that can be engaged as a tool within that process.

Feature in LA Times on site specific performance in LA | 06/22/08
I am thrilled to be part of the article on site-specific performance in the LA Times. LA TIMES Wookey The story is written by Sara Wolf.

Excerpt:

"I was looking for intimacy in a city that doesn't invite that, so the walking allowed me to literally get in touch with L.A., to feel it beneath my feet."

The multidisciplinary choreographer soon discovered that she was attracted to empty storefronts, deserted movie theaters and blank billboards -- all sources of respite from the sensory overload she had been experiencing. "I was so happy they were there. When you're walking, you slow down and don't see them as 'urban decay.' As an artist, I saw them as spaces of imagination as well as spaces of rest." She began photographing these "breathing rooms" and documenting their locations. To date, she has archived more than 300 shots.
